NAESHORN Tempera on Board by Hans Scherfig
Well known Danish author Hans Scherfig (1905-79) was the Scandinavian answer to Henri Rousseau, painting incredibly imaginative anaimal centric scenes. This work features a Scherfig standard, the rhinocerous, bathing in a pool. The surrounding jungle is dense with foliage and numerous inhabitants, including monkeys, birds and a serpent. Terrific effect is achieved, with the foreground rendered with crisp definition, while the background fades into the jungle mist. Signed Scherfig. 21" H 35" W.
