Sullivan Kilrain Bare Knuckle Boxing Photo by Thomas Pye 1889
Legal bare knuckle boxing came to its end with the epic bout between John Sullivan and Jake Kilrain. Intended for 80 rounds it only lasted 75 before Kilrain fell to Sullivan. New Orleans photographer Thomas Pye documented the dozens of gut busting rounds, capturing numerous classic frames as the sport came to a close. This photo was captured early, in the seventh round as Kilrain clinched Sullivan´s neck. A wonderful reminder of when all men wore hats, and a few put their lives on the line for the amusement of the many.
