Massive Bronze Gong by Harry Bertoia
Bertoia´s work evolved over decades through several styles of work, from early melt coated abstracts, to the golden straw and bush forms, ultimately climaxing with his sounding sculptures, termed Sonambient. The final culmination of the style are the gongs, examples of which are rare and each totally unique. This example is vaguely styled after a Roman helmet, with eyelets and nose guard. The thick bronze sheets were cut by hand, with astonishing exactitude. The gong has been subjected to chemical patination by the artist, resulting in an Army camoflage pallette. Sold with a contemporary stand.
