Aquatania Funnels by Eve Drewelowe (1899-1989)

Eve Drewelowe holds the distinction of being the first person to earn a MasterĀ“s degree in art from the University of Iowa, in 1924. In the long career that followed, she explored a multitude of painting styles, with healthy portions of Surrealism in the manner of DeChirico, and near abstract expressionism in the total mix. "Aquatania Funnels" dating from 1945, depicts the deck of a large steamship, with its various rigging and tubes sprouting in a fashion defying standard perspective. It features a rich pallette, and is rendered in a strong WPA style, with avant garde hints. The work is titled and signed to the lower left, and appears on the overleaf of page 24, of the book EVE DREWELOWE, published by the University of Iowa, 1988. 36" H 30" W
